Am I being paranoid

Could really do with some impartial thoughts here .....

I'm still on probation and last week was abit stressful for me on a personal level but still held things together for work. Line manager noticed that I was abit stressed and asked if I was OK....which I was, it was just events and the amount of work that I had to get through.

Anyway we had a get together at the end of the week and he said he had hoped to have been able to give me some extra work to free his time for various reasons but thought that it might have been because there have been one holiday after another in the team. Another informal chat is planned for this week. (all work is now up to date and I can now take on that work he wants me to, which he is aware of)

There's been an odd sort of atmosphere in work - can't put my finger on it but something doesn't feel right - since and I've noticed that there is a job advert with the agency that I got the job through that is practically the same as mine.......am I being paranoid ?

I know that my line manager spoke to HR after after he had spoken to me which has just added to the unsecure feeling.

I would add that apart from one piece of work that I forgot to do last week during this stressful period there has been no compliants about my work.....in fact I was told that they were pleased with me.

Sorry - no one else can give any useful advice here, OP. All anyone could do is give opinions based on very little information from one perspective.

You'll just have to wait and see what happens.Just focus on getting on with the job. Hope it turns out okay.

I agree with cazziebo, but must say when I read this it sounds very similar to the circumstances of my last job!

Not to put a downer on it as it could be paranoia, but I had similar things happen (I actually wasn't given enough work and despite asking they didn't give me any more). I had a 'chat' with one of them one week to discuss things (they also told me they were happy with my work) and the following week seemed to improve...that was until later in the week where, like you, I sensed something wasn't quite right and was called in on the Friday and dismissed. That night I looked online and saw that my job had been advertised since Tuesday. There is a very long boring post about it on here somewhere!

Hope it's not anything like that, but thought i'd share my experience. I wouldn't let it worry you though, it might not be anything.

Could they be taking someone else on to help with the workload?

    Thanks guys for your replies...

I know no-one could really answer that question for me but it doesn't stop me worrying - last thing I need is to lose this job, so its abit like the chicken and egg senario ....more stress means the potential to make more mistakes which means more stress.

There is someone else joining the team....but I know some interviews have already taken place for this so I doubt very much that it could be that .....of course there could be a really innocent answer of the agency just fielding the advert to get CVs in. The other thing I would add is that the job title isn't the same as mine but this could be a deliberate ploy.

My confidence has been rock bottom over what has happened in the last 6 months and I was being to build it back up .....last thing I need is for it to be shattered again.

Stop worrying. Worrying won't improve your work or make any difference to the outcome. Remember that agencies are advertising 'vapourware' jobs to attract applicants, and do the best work you can manage.
  • Just thought I would give you all an update.

Went in today and was called into a meeting - basically I was told that my performance wasn't what they expected.

We had a chat and was told that the managers would go away and have a think about what I had said, and then come to a decision.

Anyway they kept me on tenderhooks until 3pm and then told me they had decided to let me go.

So again for the 3rd time in 6 months I've been let go.........can't wait for 2009 to be over with.

  • I'm sorry to hear that and hope you're ok. I guess if it's the third time in six months you need to really think about what you could do differently in your next job. Good luck, fingers crossed things improve for you soon.
"I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together." Marilyn Monroe
  • The thing is I don't think I could do anything differently ....

....the 1st time I was dismissed over what was a displinary offence but not a dismissal offence - the manager just wanted to make a point to the other staff

....the 2nd time, it was the fact that the company was in severe financial trouble and I was an expense they decided they could do with out

and now they've decided that I couldn't cope with the volume of work, which I couldn't initially but had worked smarter and more efficiently over the last month (had only been there 2 1/2 months)

They did mention that they could see me working in the area that I worked in but just not with them .

    I haven't told OH yet - don't know how to ................

Sorry to hear that but you do need to tell your OH.

It is unfortunate that you were unable to cope with the workload, even though you ended up working smarter during the latter stages of your probationary period, some firms want people to hit the ground running.

I know that you said that you had suffered from some stress but I think you need to learn to handle the stress better so that you are not left in the same situation again. Problems at home stay at home - don't take them to work with you. Have your lunch away from the office don't sit in there and eat it as it will compound your stress.

    Good luck for the future.

I am sorry to hear that you have now lost your job. I hope you will soon find a new job so that 2009 will end on a positive note. I agree with Horace you need to tell your OH as soon as possible.
