Faulty New Exhaust Now What Do i Do

Late june had cat convertor and middle section of my exhaust replaced (making major sounds) cost £220, day after picking the car up the exhaust started making knocking noise when i took car back engineer loaded the car on lift shook exhaust and said nothing wrong with that, car now keeps cutting out when the rev's drop to under 1000 which as the car is power steering can be hair raising to say the least. Went to trading standards who said i should send a letter to the garage telling them all the problems and give them 14 days to repair which i did. Garage ignored me and TS have said as they have done nothing criminal there is nothing i can do apart from get it fixed and launch a claim through the county courts. have had another garage have a quick look and they say looks like something has been left in the exhaust and all the wiring has just been left loose and hanging in the engine and they had never seem such a shocking mess before. HELP Me please dont know what to do next

i very much doubt the exhaust could cause the fault of it keeping cutting out at low revs.
ive got a petrol focus and the exhaust maniold, the down pipe and the flexi is all the one part, the cat is seperate.
why was the wiring in such a mess? theres really no need for anyone to be messing with any wiring if they are changing the exhaust (apart from the lambda sensor).
did you actually see the work that was aparently the worst the other garage had ever seen? if not or if you werent too sure what you were looking at i would take that with a pinch of salt.

  • All the wiring that came off the cat was not fixed like it should have been but was hanging down and underneath the hood was a right mess it was not like that before they had it my OH showed me.

There is now a really loud banging and the exhaust is really noisey which it was not when it was ok
  • Is it perhaps the flexi part of the pipe thats falling apart? A cat has no wires (At least the tdci Fiesta I done didnt). And (although I await being shot down if wrong) I assume 1 wire to a lamda sensor somewhere.

In any case, it needs fixed. Tell the garage that is going to do the work that you are going to be taking the other garage to court and would like a documented account of what they are doing and what they have found wrong with the exhaust (that can be attributed to the parts fitted or the way they have been fitted).

Is there no engine management light on?
  • you are blaming a dodgy exhaust fitted in june for this?

    too late i think
  • Not to late i hope cause TS were investigating and only let me know their conclusion last weekend
  • There is no Engine Management light on sorry. They replaced the flexi hose and the way they have left the wire to a lamda sensor means it has now nearly rubbed through.

Lot to be said for my 31 year old Land Rover. Full new exhaust system £29 + Vat inc all fittings, brackets and gaskets.
No Lambada sensor (I think it tells you if there's a dance nearby) No power steering, I just have an extra Weetabix, No cat under there apart from next door's tabby that likes to keep warm and I can get underneath without any ramp or alike to change it myself (the exhaust not the moggy)- takes 10 mins.

and im sure if you had to drive the length of the country on a winters day there would be a lot to be said for the focus aswell with a nice heater in it. or stuck in a traffic jam on the hottest day of the year with the air con on.
