Undercharged in a shop

I just bought a hard drive and also got it cloned onto a new drive and installed at a PC shop.

They quoted (over phone) £90 but when I paid they told me £40 (with an invoice) which I paid by card and left with my PC.

I am thinking maybe they did not include the price of the drive. Can they charge my card with the extra £50 without my authorisation?

    I don't think so.

Presumably, if they'd over-charged, you certainly wouldn't expect a refund of the difference would you ;)

Can't some people just be honest?

Only if the invoice said £90 and they put £40 on the card in error.

    Invoice was for £40
  • They probably won't even realise until they do a stock check and find they're down an item. Then they'll probably assume it's been stolen and write it off!

    Just consider yourself lucky!

You have to ask yourself just one question...

    Do I feel lucky?

    Well, do ya punk?

Maybe they felt guilty at charging £50 for something so simple as insterting a couple of screws, a couple of cables and performing a few mouse clicks.

But, on the other hand possibly the person on the phone got it wrong.

personally (and apologies, i had not read your post properly and only just realised that you had got the quote over the phone) i would just forget about it and presume that the invoicing people got it right. If you really want to be sure, ring again pretending to be somebody else, ask for a quote for the same problem. See what they say. Then forget about it.

They have since e-mailled to check that everything is ok and not mentioned the price.

I got their details from a web noticeboard at work and it did say to mention it for a discount but looking online the cheapest price for the drive alone is around £60 (it's a 1TB Seagate Barracuda).

I did give them a glowing review - maybe the price was to drum up business.
