Moving In...

Ok just noticed a similar thread, but I'm asking the opposite.
We are going to be moving in, in September of this year. Now for the bills etc. we will most likely change providers for the Electricity and Phone/Internet. So how do we best go about doing this?
Do we to get details off them first and then change them when we get them, or are we able to arrange with the new suppliers a start date?
For ease we may end up going for talktalk broadband + phone although that is still undecided.
I just wanted to know what we needed to do to get a smooth transition from their providers to our own; i.e. so we don't have any 'downtime' with any of the services.
Any help very much appreciated
