How to secure a hanging basket?

Please can somebody give me some ideas how I can secure a hanging basket on my porch? The last one somebody pinched it, and I do not want this to happen again. I like flowers very much and would like to have some ideas how to stop this happening again? I am sure this is quite a common problem. Thanks

Smear the edges of the basket with anti vandal paint. (or dog do)

Sit up all night with a shot gun waiting. Every night!

Dont make such darned beautiful hanging baskets...

Sorry, i'm sure someone will be along shortly with much more helpful answers!

  • There's no guaranteed way but to slow them down enough to worry them, wrap wire tightly around the hook and the eye in the porch.

It's not too difficult to use a chain that has links large enough to get a small bolt through, use washers if you think the bolt head is too small. Tighten up the nut tightly with a couple of spanners and they'll need bolt croppers, a hacksaw or 2 spanners to get it down (too much effort for most toe rags).

You can also drill a small hole directly through the bracket and bolt the chain to that instead.

Can say both above techniques work.

Hanging baskets look great but are usually taken by opportunists. I tend to loop wire through the chains of the basket and the bracket that its on and also use a couple of electrical cable ties as well.

That way if they turn up with scissors the wire will take them 5-10 minutes as well. Also think about the height they are at.

If they are head height or above they will need a ladder and scissors and time.

Never had mine go missing yet.

I drilled a small hole through the bracket ,just the right size to allow the shackle of a small padlock to pass through. i then used said lock to loop through the hole and the baskets chain. job done.

Fewyears ago they went down the local towns high street and cut down all the baskets. Probably sold at boot sale next morning before anyone realised they were missing.
I did 4 big ones for the village pump, they lastsed until the Friday night when pub revellers used them as footballs.
