Left some jewellery in will

Hello all,

My sisters and I have been left some jewellery in the will of my deceased Dad's cousin (who we didnt know other than christmas and birthday cards).

The executer of the will is my uncle (Dad's brother and again cousin of the recently deceased) whom we have had no contact with since my Dad died 3 and half years ago. Then suddenly he asks to meet up, gives us the news (not info of when, how etc)and a box and told us to split it and sign a form and send back to him.

We were not informed of her death in case we wished to send flowers or attend the funeral. So just wondering how long ago might she have passed? Who long do wills take to get sorted?

Also we have only been passed the page in which we are mentioned are we allowed to see the entire will at all?

Thanks
Mand x

Sounds a bit petty on behalf of your uncle - doing his duty and little more, very sad. Length of time depends on the extent of the estate and how complicated it is.

You can buy a copy of the complete will through the Probate Office. Your uncle has in fact done more than he is legally obliged to by showing you a copy of one page. Bit silly though - he is not prohibited from giving you a copy of the complete thing, just doesn't have to

The executor has a year to deal before anyone can press him. You are only entitled to a copy of the Will if you are a residuary beneficiary.

I'm sure it's a shock and he hasn't handled it well, but would you really have gone to the funeral of someone you only had Christmas card contact with? And to have had no contact with your uncle since your dad died, is there some past history there, in which case I'm sorry, or is family not really a big deal? Unless you want more frequent contact, the same thing will happen when your uncle passes away, noone will think you care and so you won't be notified.

If it was just a relative you only had Crimbo card contact with why do you want to see the whole will anyway? That's a bit, well nosy is the only word I can come up with.

I would just be delighted that a distant relative had considered me in this way.
  • Hello all

Thanks for your replies. The "history" is that my mum and dad were getting divorced (after married 35years+) and he died suddenly of a heart attack in the middle of the night which we found him at home one sunday morning. The uncle in question helped my mum sort all the matters after my Dad's death. He then stopped talking to all of our family - mum and us 4 children - hence us having nothing to do with him for 3 and half years. My mum thinks it because he blames her for stressing him out over divorce (although they had been leading seperate lives for many years and proceedings were ICRC almost a year or so into divorce while still living together).

No we probably wouldnt have attend the funeral - she live'd the other end of the country but of course we would have liked to have known and been able to send flowers, condolences etc.

I can probably find out the in and out of it from another family member who emailed me on genes reunited as we would like to know.

The uncle called to say he needee to meet us (after 3 and half year no contact) and the meeting place was in a car park at 8.30pm last night. Was very weird and he could have just said on the phone X has died and left you girls some jewellery in her will that I need to pass onto you. But we had all sorted of weird thoughts on what was going to happen in an empty car park before we left. A very silly way to have handled it. We will put a note in with the signed forms to say how disappointed we were in how he has gone about.

Yes the ? about the seeing the entire will was just out of noseyness.

And our family is very important to us. Obviously who knows what will happen or how we would be informed of the said uncles passing whenever that might be.

Well perhaps it's time to be the bigger person and extend the hand out to build some bridges and bring the family a little bit closer together? Doesn't sound like he is about to but it's worth a try on your side and then if it doesn't work out, well you know you did your best.

The only reason I can think of is that the OP wants to check if there is anything else in the will that should be coming their way, that the uncle may not have told them about.

    Hopefully I am wrong.
