Log cabin treatment?

I have nearly finished building my new log cabin (see why it's not finished yet on the vent board under shedstore.co.uk) and my thoughts have turned to what to paint it with.

The standard fence paints are a no no as they come in dark colours designed to mask rough sawn wood and would make a beautiful building just look like any other shed.

The manufacturer recommends using Sadolin as it is microporous but having priced it that is not an option.

Cuprinol do Shed and fence preserver, they also do a Decorative Preserver but the colour options are the usual red cedar, chestnut etc

I have narrowed it down to two possible treatments.

Firstly, Ronseal do a decking treatment which I would NOT use exactly for what it says on the tin. It says it seals the wood but allows it to breathe. It is also available in clear so would not affect the colour of the timber too much. At £20 for 5litres it's not too bad pricewise either.

Secondly, I have a real OS solution which would be to use linseed oil all over the cabin. This might be the cheapest option but I know I would have to re apply the stuff at least every year. Also, would it give that much protection against rot and infestation?

I would bite the bullet and use Sadolin or another make called Sikkens. It's the old saying "Don't spoil the ship for a ha'porth of tar".

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Had a similar dilema with my Log cabin about 2 years ago. In the end I used Barretine Wood preserver in golden brown however we are in the process of redoing it as it has weathered quite badly and this time have gone for Ronseal quick drying woodstain in antique pine. I looked at all the shed and fence treatment but they seems to be for rough sawn wood. I am very pleased with the result so far. It is costly, I expect it will cost about £100 (using 3 coats) but it says it should last 3 years so I figure it will be cheaper in the long run.

    Good luck

I would definately say that timber treatment is one of those areas where you cannot cut corners. You can cut costs by searching around but dont cut corners. For many years I have run a similar company to the one from which you purchased your building so I do have some experience in the results of what happens when an inferior product is used. I would suggest Sadolin or Cuprinol 5-Year Woodstain (no longer available but can often still be found in stores) would be my preference based on price but, if you were looking to spend a little more, I would recommend either of the two products shown here (note: this is NOT my company so please do not infer any hidden agenda!)

    Hope this helps
