Well Im fed up with my Henry. I really wish he would die!
Its heavy, cumbersome, and smelly even though i have bought a new charcoal filter.
Theres no way of knowing how full the bag is without lifting the whole motor and lid contraption off.I just get the feeling its lost suction, must only be about 4 years old tho'. I dont think the carpets are getting a good clean. i have 2 long haired cats and a dog so a good vacuum cleaner is vital.
This darned Pneumatic seems indestructible and I feel so guilty for considering spending alot of money on anew cleaner. I am seriously tempted by a Dyson 25 Animal. I can get one for £218 *gulps* (good price for the model though).
I feel your pain but then pet owners are notorious for thinking a suction only head (the stiff bristles are for hard floors) will shift pet hair - not at all! You can buy a 32mm large size turbo brush for shifting hairs but remember the roller brush will need constant maintenance of removing hairs that have wrapped around the roller brush. This is NO different to an upright vacuum that has a bigger roller. Numatic make their own turbo brush but you can also use ones for Electrolux, Hoover or Morphy Richards that have an additional air slider on the top or bottom that will make gliding easier on carpets as well. Certainly if you want more info msg me - I have a James model which is pretty similar to Henry.
If Henry or whatever Numatic you have is smelly then the pipes and hose need a good clean out! Not the fault of the charcoal filter or the vacuum. Also Numatic have better high filter synthetic dust bags called "HEPA Flo," which last longer than the brown paper/green dust bags and are a great deal easier to fit. Check the suction at the end of the pipes or hose to see if you think suction has been reduced with a NEW bag in place. If there is a clog you'll need to inspect the hose and pipes as pet hair can get clogged in cylinder vacuums from time to time.
There are many ways of cleaning out the hoses and pipes.
1) Use antibacterial pound shop wipes to push down each straight pipe with a blunt narrow stick (I use a piece of bamboo) several times up and down and be surprised at the amount of brown gunge that comes out! Repeat procedure with dry kitchen towels or bounce dryer sheets to dry the inner metal.
2) Lay the entire hose (but not the metal pipes) in a bath for 24 hours in lukewarm water. A bit of washing powder will loosen dirt off, or washing up liquid. Once the water has cooled, drain water and fill the bath with cold water. Add a couple of tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda and a little vinegar and lay the hose in the bath. This should steralise the hose. After about 5 hours, return to bath and let the water out. The hose should then be allowed to air dry for 24 hours. Test the hose by putting your finger in to see if the ribs have dried, if not then the hose must never be put back onto ANY vacuum until it has throughly dried out.
3) Or buy a brand new stretch hose = so many are available at cheaper costs from EBAY.
4) Once everything has dried out, add a further tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda to the dust bag. Soda powder (or soda crystal powder) is great at neutralising rotting pet hair in the dust bag. You'll soon find that your Henry is up to its usual standard of working again the way it used to!0 -
Definitely go for the Henry! They last for years! Sainsburys currently have 20% off in my local store making a grand total of £80! I think they are also reduced in homebase to £85 but if you take advantage of the 20% off voucher that is going around you can get it for £68!!!0
