I want to buy an external hard drive as a back up - there is one in Robert Dyas for £49.99 250 GB - is this a good buy?

There is a difference between a portable hard drive and an external hard drive.
Portable hard drive is smaller (in size and capacity), slower but gets all it's power from the USB socket so it does not need to be plugged into the mains. Usually used for moving about large documents, films, etc.
External hard drives are the same as internal drives (same size, speed, etc), but they are in an external enclosure usually connected by USB. More commonly used for backing up of either lots of individual files (photos, music, etc), or for whole disk images of your computer.0 -
Thanks - Think it is an external drive I need - purely for backing up0

Tesco usually have external drives - you can get club points and also cashback if shopping online (QuidCo/Topcashback/etc.).0
