Buying first car (used) - provisional license holder over 30 - help with insurance!

My husband is buying his first car. It is a used car. We don't know much about the rules here. When will it be transferred to his name? What is the process? At which stage should he be covered by insurance?

He used to drive in his country of origin but in the UK he has a provisional licence. However, he is over 30 so not a young driver by any means. What is the best way to find an insurer in this situation?

  • The car should be insured before your husband drives it and places it on a public road once he owns it.

As for his provisional licence, he will need to display "L" plates and have some one with him who hold's a full UK licence, has done for at least 3 years and is also over the age of 21. This is every time he drives it.

Try the Cooperative Insurance Society, they are pretty good, i have used them for the last 35 years.

And do take on board what Chippy Minton says - he is not allowed to drive alone otherwise his insurance will be invalidate and he will get into a lot of trouble.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Norwich Union (now Aviva) and Endsleigh give insurance to foreign license holders without paying thru nose. NU also considers non UK driving experience.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Thanks to everyone who replied. Not to worry, I'm aware of the law for provisional drivers and will make sure my husband follows it, despite the fact that he has a friend driving on his own on a provisional licence and even when the police stopped him, they let him off with a verbal warning. I'm a stickler for rules though so we won't be doing that.

My other question is - when should we buy the insurance? If I''ve understood correctly (please correct me if I'm wrong), once we pay for the car, the current owner will send off a form to the DVLA and give us a form to send off and in a few weeks we'll receive a letter saying the car is now registered in our name.

The question is at which point should the insurance start from? From the day we pay for it? From the day we receive the registration letter? From the day it comes to sit in our drive? Please help!

from the day you get the car if you want it covered for theft etc. If he doesnt plan on driving it for a while and its in a safe place you can just get the insurance to start from the first day he drives it.

Confused.com, moneysupermarket or comparethemarket.com for car insurance. Comparethemeerkat dont do car insurance. Simples ;-)
