Too late?

I wrote to Northern Rock to try and reclaim my PPI charges on a loan. When they refused me I just accepted their decision and didn't go to the ombudsman. I took the policy out on 21-1-2004 and last contacted them on 14-10-2007. Am I too late to apply to the ombudsman? If not do I need to contact Northern Rock again first? I recieved two letters of refusal from them. I feel really silly for letting this slide after reading your advice!

If they sent you a final response then and enclosed in the letter details of taking this further with the Ombudsman you have to do this within 6 months of the letter. As you have not then I doubt the Ombudsman would look into this for you but you can always try. If they never provided a final response then maybe you can write back and say about your complaint again and see what they write back. They may send you another final response if you are lucky but only MAY do. You have nothing to lose though by trying both ways. I would try Northern Rock though first.

    Hi there and welcome.

I agree with Marshallka, give it a go.
And there is no need to feel silly.;)
Good luck and please keep us posted.

  • If a final response has been issued Northern Rock are unlikely to change their decision and even if the FOS take it on, Northern Rock doesn't have to do anything except tell them you are outside the 6 months.
  • Ive checked through my paperwork and I have never received a final response. Customer services asked me to contact them again if I was still unhappy. I did not hear back from them after I threatened the ombudsman. Is it worth a try?

You can always try writing back although they usually give you a timescale to get back to them and then close the complaint. You have nothing to lose though only a stamp (recorded delivery of course) so give it a go. Without doing it you never know.

I agree with your Melorablack here. I know that often FOS say they will accept a complaint and its often the company that state "no can do" as rules have not been followed. Still worth a shot though don't you think or you can drive yourself crazy not knowing either way.

    BTW How are you??;)

    Hi there

I would do then what Marshallka have suggested by writing for a final response, as you did not receive one. Tell them you did write back and never received this and due to other matters which are personal going on (if this was also the case), its only now you realised this, if you want to.;)

    Otherwise contact the FOS.

  • A final response has to include your Ombudsman rights where the company basically says "if you remain unhappy you can contact the Financial Ombudsman......" if you haven't had a letter saying this you haven't had a final response yet.

  • Hi - I've just won a N.Rock complaint in my favour for a loan taken out in 2001! I agree with all of the advice here and would add that it would appear that Northern Rock seem to be more sympathetic to complaints compared to their attitude from 2 years back. I'm sure it's to do with the complaints from the Ombudsman, so do go for it!
