Stupid Question - Excel

I am not new to computers but I am to excel.

Whilst typing in data into a cell I gave it a yellow background. However when I removed the yellow background by changing the colour to white all the surround cell disappeared. Can anybody explain what I did wrong? Really appreciate it.

    You need to select no fill rather than white. By selecting white, you've made the lines around the box white as well, hence the reason you can't see them!

    If I do they by mistake just copy and paste another empty cell over it and it puts the lines back in.
    I used to suffer from lack of motivation.... now I just can't be arsed.
