Deposit and first months rent for benefit claimants.

My sister in law, her fiance and their baby are currently looking for a house to rent. They have seen one that is close to where I live and it is ideal for them. The owner of the house says that he will get back to them in about 3 weeks once the repairs have been done, to let them know if they can be his tenants.

They are on benefits and the owner is happy with that, but they need to try and get the deposit and first months rent within the next 3 weeks. This amounts to a little over £900. As they are on benefits they don't have this to hand. Is there anyway they can get help for this.

Also they are moving down from scotland so all their claims are up there at the moment. Would they be able to put in a LHA claim down here with the proof of benefit letter they have from up there.
I used to suffer from lack of motivation.... now I just can't be arsed.

  • This is really a benefit issue, so you may get more answers over there!

He could try asking the council to which he is moving whether they have a deposit bond scheme, which will pay the deposit for them. They will probably have more success with this if they are moving for a specific purpose, i.e job, family, illness, etc.

If they already have LHA then it should be just a case of changing address, but if they are on HB then it will be a new claim, they could go ahead and start putting the claim in now, but it wont be complete until they have something from the LL confirming the tenancy and the costs.
