90% Public Sector Final Salary Pension Meltdown Scandal

90%!

I was rather surprised at the country of origin however...

As a public sector worker with a final salary pension (and therefore one of the most hated people on any board with the words "house price" in it's title), I shall be watching this with interest.

My feeling is every area of the public sector is likely to take a severe beating over the next 4-5 years, this includes pensions. I don't think public sector workers are hated, but many do not live in the real world (the world of the last 12-18 months), rises, increments, pensions, sick leave etc..... all reinforce this.

The bill for the government's recklessness over the past 12 years has to be paid, and the economy in general will only support a small portion of this coming from taxes.

    In other words:

I want public sector workers to suffer more than private sector workers. Over the last 12-18 months, private sector workers have had more hardship than public sector workers and this is just not on. For the decade before that, private sector workers could laugh at the public sector idiots for being such fools to take a public sector job. We could laugh at them all striking to just get a payrise while we took our bonuses. We could taunt them at christmas while we were all enjoying our holidays. We could say "hey, I got 3.6% payrise this year....what, you only got 1.6%...hahahahaha, time to get a real job".

But now, some are better off than us and this simply is not fair!
  • I think people's anger is more to do with the fact that the public sector bill has gone up in terms of tax and the increase in staff numbers.
And yet, are the services really any better?
I would say given the amount of extra resources and cash put into the public sector, we, as a nation, have had poor value for money.
This is personally what upsets me when we're discussing the whole private/public sector situation.
I expected taxes to go up in '97, but I also expected a comparable increase in services. This has not happened in my personal experience.

I'd definately agree. Services have improved, but not in line with the investment.

But that's not the staff's fault. Thats red tape and beauracracy, created by this government.
  • As an economy and therefore private enterprise grows, there has to be a corresponding growth in the public sector to support it (i.e. immigration services, Inland Revenue, etc.). What people have to realise is that, conversely, as an economy shrinks there should be a corresponding impact on the public sector.

Why unions and workers in the public sector don't get this, is beyond me.

What world would that be then, the one where very rich bankers from the private sector have effectively destroyed the very capitalism they reap the benefits from while being bailed out by the taxpayer?

    That's not quite right.

As the economy shrinks, more people turn to the public sector services. Just think of the increase in enquiries etc, payments via benefits etc. I was speaking to someone the other day who now gets benefits so is having her teeth sorted while it's free.

It's also worth noting that things like Swine Flu will also increase employment in the public sector.

Is this the same person you know who is a single mum and creams £30k from the welfare state?
