Hi,
running Vista home premium, have had a problem for a couple of weeks now, and it's starting to bug me,
the first time I right click a file or programme after start up I get ' windows explorer not responding' after I restart the programme it is fine. I've done a search, but can't seem to find a definite answer.
Any ideas, thanks.

Erm... use Windows XP instead?
Have you installed any new programs recently? If so could they be causing the problem?
You may to do a Windows re-install.0 -
Hi,
thanks for the reply,
no new programmes, just whatever updates arrive, I was wondering if it might be Windows Defender, I had about 7 updates of KB 971557, I've disabled Defender, but no difference, can I just delete KB 971557?

your problem is that it could be a lot of things that cause explorer to go to not responding. Is it immediately after windows has started, if so could it be that your files haven't fully loaded before you have tried to open them so try giving the machine another minute or so to load properly. I've had it when explorer will crash if you have some security software that is set to scan as soon as the pc is turned on as it uses all the resources of the system, esp norton, you could check that they arent set to scan.0

File access problems could just be the power leads to the hard drive, try powering off and reconnect the leads in the desktop PC - also reseat the data cables. Are you using a caddie for the drive?0

Hi,
it can happen any time of day, but always the first time I right click a file, did a search and got this, similar problem.0 -
Vista is the Spawn of Satan. Obscure and annoying problems are a fact of life when running it.
To reduce the number of times this one annoys you I'd suggest you turn on hibernation (I forget how right now and this machine is XP) and then hibernate instead of shutting down. Of course you will still have to startup from scratch sometimes but it will be less times.0 -
Hi,
think I'm sorted, seems it's something to do with a context menu, so I used method 2 here and whittled it down to Eraser, so everything fine, just now. :j0
