Car dealer increased price of a car

Today I bought a car I saw advertised on ebay and autotrader (from a reputable garage). When I put down the deposit - the price had increased by £200. I discussed this with the garage owner and I accepted that the price on ebay was an auction - so it was a starting price.
I got home and checked autotrader again, and it's listed @ £200 less than what I'm being asked to pay.
Is it legal for the garage to do this or should I expect to pay the advertised price only?
If I pay the full price - is there any chance of me recovering it afterwards?
Any advice appreciated.

If you have agreed to pay a certain price then the fact that the car has been advertised at a different price is irrelevant. From your description the garage has done nothing illegal.
Why did you pay the deposit if the price had gone up £200? I'm deducing from your post that you saw the price on eBay and Autotrader and then phoned up and discovered the price was £200 more than you thought? If you then paid the deposit then you accepted price quoted.0 -
Take someone who knows what they're doing next time, they'll try and bring the price down rather than accept it going up!0

I've not agreed to the price - he's holding the car on my deposit while I think about it - I can get it back tomorrow if needs be.
thanks for the reponses - sounds like a grown-up conversation about it is the best option.0 -
What happens to your deposit (which he is using to hold the car whilst you ponder) if you back out?? are you expecting it back??0

:-) I think you care more about my deposit than I do!
I'll be taking the car regardless of the resolution of the issue - it's still an excellent deal - it just could be £200 better!
I just wanted to hear some other opinions... it's been helpful!
thanks very much

Explain to him that unless he is reasonable and comes to an arrangement you will have to explain the situation on the feedback and mark it accordingly - after you see the car so it's not sabotaged!0
