Help - My Baking Powder stinks

I've only started to use this recently so wasn't sure if it supposed to have this disgusting smell.

I've done a search online which said as long as it is airtight it shouldn't go off. I bought it at an ethnic market and it's been sealed in a jar since, but it stunk when I tipped it out of the packaging when first bought.

It has a really strong (eyes watering) ammonia smell, and the banana bread i'm doing right now asked for 3 teaspoons, i really can't see it being edible when it comes out.

So is it supposed to smell like this?
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

I don't think it should smell of anything, do you think it could have been contaminated before you bought it? What sort of packaging was it in? I hardly like to say what smells of ammonia!

If you lace some in water it should fizz, if it doesn't it's gone off. According to my web research anyhoo....
