Over here I like we are in a different situation & lag the US re recovery. We are much more indebted (public/private on an individual pro rota basis)
Actually the USA has a much higher per-capita National Debt than us, even after all that QE. We've been racking it up during the current crisis but they have been doing it for decades. In fact the US government has spent more than it earned every year since 1957! (source)

Wow! A lot of good thoughts here and you guys are really WAY above my level in finances. I am going to reread this thread a few times, cheaper and more fun than an MBA class. In time, if I follow you all well enough, I might finally tackle the Intelligent Asset Allocator and Bogle on Mutual Funds, which my husband has long tried to convince me were as spellbinding as my Jane Austen novels, if I could just get in the right mind-set.;)

inflation wont come back for at least 2 years
  • Or you could follow Andrew Carnegie's dictum: "The way to become rich is to place all your eggs in one basket and then watch that basket". His point being that diversification ensures you never maximise returns. Unfortunately that approach is dependent on having his ability for choosing the right basket.
Then your whole time in the market would be (As Alex Ferguson puts it) squeaky bum time. Would be great if my investments would turn out to be good 100% of the time.
A bit of gold is good to have (the real stuff, not ETFs), a bit of silver even better.
What is wrong with the Physical Precious Metals ETFs offered by ETF Securities? PHAU and PHAG. They are fully backed by the physical metal.
