ive got a bad credit rating can i still get a landline phone?

I think it depends on the provider's criteria whether you "pass" their credit check.
I've got a rather bad credit rating myself (can only get a basic bank account) but I didn't have a problem passing a Virgin (phone & broadband) credit check last week [subsequently canceled order] nor one for the Post Office (Home Phone) yesterday.
Based on that I'd say their criteria is much less than that for getting credit-related items. Phone companies sometimes set limits on account balances, Three did for me a few years back (I hit £300 half way through a month and had to pay half my bill before I could make outgoing calls again).
I believe BT may ask for a deposit if you have a poor credit rating that you'll get back after so many months, although I'm not sure how they'd decide between asking for a deposit and saying no.
I assume it'd be harder to get a new account/phone line with a company you owe money though.
