Comet Price Match policy

Comet have a price match policy which states that they will match any price of a store within 10 miles. This includes products bought online. The only exceptions are that Comet won't match mail order club prices or internet companies with no stores.
They are selling a laptop that I want to buy for £950. Currys and John Lewis are also selling the same laptop for £799. I have asked them to price match, they've confirmed its the same laptop but won't match the price as they say they would be selling it at a loss.
Can they do this? Their price match policy doesn't state any exclusions other than the 2 I mentioned. Unfortunately I have a Comet gift card to use so I can't buy it from the other stores selling it cheaper but I'm annoyed at having to spend £150 more.

They can refuse to sell anything to anyone for any price, so yes they can do this...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

technically I cant see an issue, their own website doesnt mention anything about certain refusalsWe pride ourselves on low prices all year round and not just at sale time.
In fact we check the prices of over 27,000 of our products against our competitors every week to make sure we always give you the best possible value.
We're so confident our prices are unbeatable that we've come up with the Comet Price Guarantee.
Here's how it works: if you've bought something from us and you find an identical product at a lower price within 10 miles of the store you bought it from, we'll refund the difference. Just let us know within 14 days. You can't lose.
Our Comet Price Guarantee applies to products you've bought over the phone or online as well as in store.
All we ask is that the item you compare against is boxed and sold as brand new, in stock and available for delivery and that we can verify the price either in writing (for example an advert) or verbally (for example by phoning them up).
There are a couple of exceptions. We won't try to match the price of internet or mail order companies with no stores. Nor do we match against warehouse or mail order clubs or voucher promotions, either online or in-store.
That's fair enough, isn't it?0 -
Why not just buy it from John Lewis then? If anything goes wrong with it, you'll get much better customer service out of JL anyway.0

comet are idiots, its probably due to the salespersons commision
I went in there once wanting to buy a miele tumble dryer in ahurry. But it was £150 cheaper on their website than it was in store.
Asked them to at least match their own website. They wouldnt do this on the miele but they would on other dryers!
The salesperson gave me all sorts of bull about if its on a lead time longer than 1 week then they cannot place the order on the system etc.
In the end he just walked off!
The issue was i had a comet time card too, at that time it didnt seem obvious that you could use it on the website. I only found this out after when i called the online sales team and they palced the order over the phone
So, ignore the store and see if its cheaper on their own website.
Otherwise, maybe try another comet store?

Thanks for all your replies. I ended up going into a store, not mentioning the gift card (so they didn't know I had to buy it from them) and they agreed to match the price straightaway. In fact, the salesman knew it was even cheaper from PC World so matched that price instead.
Apparently they have to price match, even if they end up losing money on an item, as otherwise they could be accused of false advertising.0
