help with a computer that keeps shutting down

i have got a phillips freeline mt 2000 that was playing up a while back and i did an fdisk on it and wiped everything off,
since then i have formatted it and put xp pro on, the os went on ok and now the computer keeps re starting as soon as it gets to the boot up part where it says press any key to start from cd or dvd, i am not sure if this is a driver issue and i might need to get the drivers from phillips or if there is another problem where something is packing up,
i would be gratefull for any help.

  • Ok have you checked your system bios to ensure HDD is set as the primary boot device.
Also check system bios to see AHCI mode is enabled, that is it your machine supports this.

From the information you have given the problem seems to point to an issue with the primary boot device.

Try setting the boot option to make the hard disk the primary boot device...

(And maybe take out any DVD/CD you might have in its drive!)
  • sorry it has taken me so long to reply i was not at my computer last night,
how do i change the boot option as i said i dont know anything about the bios settings,
    thanks for your reply.
  • System bios can differ from make and model of systemboard within PC.
Generally on bootup you have to press F1 or delete when prompted.
On your screen when you first turn on your computer please have a read of what is says, it should say soemthing along the lines

    "to enter bios please press....."
    or
"to enter setup utility please press"
    .......
You get the drift, once in the system bios you can use the arrow keys to navigate and you can change your primary boot device under menu "startup".
In there change the primary boot device to HDD

  • I once endured this problem intermittently for 3 years until I finally replaced my power supply. A faulty or underpowered PSU can cause this.

would cause random reboots once the system is up and running.
press any key to start from cd or dvd
indicates that it has found the CD / DVD drive and (probably) a disc in it. Remove the disc and try again.

As it starts up the screen will indicate which button you need to press to go into the BIOS (or StartUp options). F1, F2 or Del are the usual.

Make sure that the Hard Drive (HDD) is set first then A Drive then CD.

If it is set correctly and still fails then the boot sector is corrupt and we'll have to advise from there.
