Internet acces with no landline

Hi

We are getting a laptop soon and do not have a landline. We want to be able to surf, send/receive e-mails, use a webcam, use a CD Rewriter to download songs and watch things, mainly footie games (partner not me) via the TV. Also will probably have Office and a printer/scanner.

Confused about best way to get internet access. We use our mobiles and don't have a landline. Think we would want unlimited to accomodate watching the games. We will also get ESPN for the SPL games but it seems you can only get it through Top Up TV, Sky, Virgin Media, Tiscali or BT Vision

Would be grateful for suggestions on best and most cost effective way to go about this but please bear in mind I am not techie minded and need simple explanations

Thanks

Mobile broadband is not suitable for high volume use so unless you are prepared to get a landline installed your only option is Virgin Media cable which will provide both internet access and TV. If you can get it. If you can't then you'll need a landline plus internet and TV possibly from separate suppliers or maybe a bundle deal.

To do what you want to do, you need a land line, so why not get one now while you can get free installation? see here

Unless Virgin media is in your area. If it is, that's definitely the way to go, as the speeds will much better, usually, than ADSL. But it's more likely than not that Virgin won't be in your area. In that case, the only decent option is a landline.

I would not say that it's definitely the way to go at all. Lots of people have the option of Virgin but choose to have a BT line, which allows them to go with an ISP which suits their needs and they are not stuck with Virgin and their prices.

I suppose that's true. Virgin can be rather expensive!

  • Thanks for info and looks like we will have to have a landline. What about getting ESPN? Would we then have to pay out for Sky , Top up TV etc to receive it and then another £10 for the ESPN? Seems it will work out quite expensive but my fella definitely wants it

Sorry if sound dumb but find it all quite confusing

ESPN is only available Via Sky, think it's free if you get the Sports pack. It's no longer available via "Top-Up-TV" or FreeView/Sat as a separate option.

If you get the get the sky sports package on virgin then the espn channels are free or according to this link

you can get the lower packages and pay so much extra with or without the sky sports package but you mention you want the top package so it might be worth get the XL package from virgin, you thought about getting the V+ box which allows you to record 2 programs whilst watching a third and you can pause and rewind live tv
  • Checked with my partner again and he doesn't need Sky Sports as only really interested in watching his beloved Celtic. Also someone told me that their dad just watches any games by linking his laptop to his TV. We are getting a TV as well and if we have HDMI output/input on both will this be OK? Can then just shop around for cheap ISP for internet access and landline.

Really appreciate time and trouble people take to help
