Read my lips....no more tax rises on my watch.......remember????
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

how would rates rising, get properties cheaper though?? is it because there would be less people wanting to buy so the prices go down?

Not quite, higher rates would lead to the banks putting up their interest rates on their SVR and Tracker products, which would put pressure on homeowners with these kinds of mortgages, which in turn might lead them to put their house on the market.

Increased supply (in theory) = lower demand ratio (in theory) = cheaper prices (in theory)

At least that's what some of the bears here are hoping ;)

All depends on what the banks do when rates start to go up. If they try to preserve their current margins then there is the potential for this kind of scenario.
  • I wonder how many years down the line they'll continue to blame the outgoing goverment? I could only blame the temp before me for a couple of months.

No different to Broon's lot. They still blame the Tories now.

I have been trying to say that the Tories agree with the low interest rates for months. For some reason, some folk (on this baord) are hoping that a Tory Government will significantly increase rates.

Well at least we now have a reference point when that little gem pops up.

My other personal favourite is that Gordon Brown personally set rates at a low level to prolong the housing boom

... and we'll be in an even worse situation if labour carry on....

We've a lib-dem voter in our midst folks....
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

I very much doubt we would have spunked anything like as much (largely wasted) cash on the public sector....as such I disagree as I suspect we would be running far less debt.

Instead they would have been busily implementing the policy of less regulation of the city that they were advocating through the boom years, resulting in an even bigger boom and bust, requiring even more cash to shore up the banks (that's if they didn't let them fail for ideological reasons and hang the consequences.)

Are you saying Gordon Brown is a thickie for not realising his actions would prolong the housing boom? ...fair enough, the person in charge of excluding housing costs from the inflation target has to be very dim to then blame others for the property bubble.

tha's because those wanting a cheap house are expecting the tories to increase rates dramatically and get them that cheap as chips property.

sorry, it's not going to happen - chin up though :money:
Blimey, you can find a way to attack a group of people whatever the subject.

At this stage, all this is bluff and bluster.

What any party does AFTER they have got in, is a completely different matter.
