Using Thornet ear powder on dogs

My Lhasa Apso had been scratching her ears over the past day or so so I have dug out the Thornet powder that I bought a few months ago.

Her ears aren't smelling but I have just treated her with Frontline as she was scratching her body so I think she may have ear mites although I can't see anything in there.

The thing is I can't find the instructions for the Thornet.

Can anyone who uses it tell me how often you are supposed to apply it please, is it once a day, twice a day, couple of times a week?

Ta.

  • Hi there, Thornitt powder is great stuff. I use it on my 2 cocker spaniels. I just put the handle of a teaspoon in the bottle, get a small amount on the end of the handle and holding their ear open (as best as can!) drop it in, close the ear and give a bit of a rub. If their ears are looking dirty, I would do this once a day for a few days but the powder is really good and should clear things up really quickly. Then I just use it about once a month. My dogs ears are really clean since using this and for spaniels ears thats saying something!

    Hope this helps!

    That's great thanks.

Hopefully she will be scratching less by the end of the week.

I also always use a wee wash first - just ear wash from the pet shop. Squirt some in, rub in well and wipe dry before dropping in the thornits the same way as dreaming has described

Personally, I have no idea why people use this ear powder! I have so many dogs come in with powdery ears and it doesnt do anything! Ear mites are probably a no no as they only really exist when the animal is really young as they have to catch them from another dog and is quite rare in older animals. Ear cleaner is prob the best thing as it breaks down the wax and gets right to the bottom of the ear :)

I guess its just one of those things - it shouldnt work but it does.

I know theres lots of dogs it doesnt work for but in the cocker show rings thornit is legend.

Tell me about the mites as that confuses me?, My cocker has suffered greatly with his skin and ears the past year and as part of the treatment plan a blitz on the mites was called for so he had a three treatments of something or other ( cant for the life of me mind the name) on the back of the neck. Now hes five and its rare that he comes that close to other dogs as he hates them but we do live on farmland. So where would he be getting a mite infestation - if indeed he ever did?
  • I've heard of Thornet before, where can I buy some or is it only available from vets?

Thornits isnt sold at vets - its an old herbal remedy used in the treatment of canker but for some reason works on ear mites

There is of course no scientific proof that it works so it really is up to you to do your research and make up your own mind

  • I use Thornitt too.... completely recommend it.
Vets don't like it because they can't see into the ear with their little light, when they are doing the routine check up. For the deeper eared breeds, do what Suki says and give them a wee wash first and then use Thornitt as a type of prophylatic. I use it 1 x weekly for routine maintainance.
