I am coming to the end of my protected price 17 for Duel fuelfrom Eon and have been loooking on the comparison sites for a better deal. I am leaning towards either Eon's FixOnline V3 which is an all in one price or the new company OVO which is a standing charge price. Can anyone explain to me if one has a benefit over the other regarding a standing charge or not.

I did a quick calculation the other day based on my usage for the last year, the difference between SC & other tariff works out a lot more expensive. So I will be choosing a none fixed tariff for now as MSE seems to think that prices will drop a little before the end of the year.
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.
  • As an aside, if you DO decide to leave Eon try and time your move carefully so you minimise the 'penalty' on the final bill. OVO's prices seem pretty decent but their exit fees are swingeing indeed.

With many tariffs the daily standing charge(DSC) and the tier 1 additional charge come to the same amount; however with 2 provisos.

    1. That you use all the tier 1 allocation each quarter

    2. That the unit charge per kWh on the DSC tariff is the same as the tier 2 price. i.e. a DSC of 10p will raise £36.50 and the additional price of tier 1 units will raise £36.50

The advantage of not having a DSC is when you use very little in a quarter, e.g gas in a summer quarter.(some people turn off their gas all summer)

It is impossible to work this out on the comparison websites.
  • I recently changed my supplier from the one in the property here when I moved in, from a SC based tariff to a non SC tariff.

Working out which was cheaper involved looking at what I used in a similarly sized house last year from the bills and working out on paper with a calculator which one would be cheapest.

In the end I chose non SC as it was working out about £48 a year less.
