Can't comment about Bordeaux specifically but I have been searching for car hire in Italy. The most difficult thing to found out with any car hire is exactly what the collision damage waiver and theft waiver excess will be and what the costs are to eliminate this excess so that you don't have to pay anything in case of accident or theft. Usually this extra cover has to be taken out and paid for when you collect the car but it's not always possible to find out in advance how much it will be and even if you do take out the extra protection it doesn't cover tyres, windscreen, etc.
The best deal I found for my requirements was through ebookers where I can get a Focus estate for 9 days at £223, then take out insurance to cover the excess amount using insurance4carhire.com. This costs about £3.30 per day and can be booked at the same time through ebookers. The only disadvantge I can find is that in the event of any claim you first have to pay the rental company for the cost of excess or repair then claim it back afterwards.
Hope this is of some help.

in the past i have found hertz has given me the best prices and so far i have not been stung for any extra fees. (fly there or la rochelle quite often, i'm half french and the family lives half way between the two airports)0

After some research, both Argus and CarHire3000 are providing pretty good quotes. Does anyone have any experience of these companies/brokers?0

Both Argus and Car Hire 3000 are good companies, you can see some reviews here...
