Whiskas Dentabits - any good for reducing tartar?

Hi there,
Our cat has some build up of tartar on her teeth and the vet suggested we try whiskas dentabits (they're doing some sort of a promotion at the moment). Have some freebies to try but wondered if anyone else has used them & how effective they are?? If we don't manage to improve it a bit, she will have to have some dental work under general anaesthetic (expensive & upsetting for the cat). Taking her in again in 6 months time. Any other suggestions also welcome!
thanks!

Unlikely to be very effective, I would think.
The best thing to do is to give your cat a RAW (it must be raw or it will be a choking hazard) chicken leg or wing every few days to chew on. Chicken wings are good to start with, as you can cut them into smaller pieces to get the cat used to the idea if it's reluctant / unsure what to do. My cat used to scarf them down, bone & all, and had shiny white teeth with no tartar. I checked with the vet & this is completely safe as long as the chicken wing / leg is RAW ... pretty much replicates what they would do in the wild after catching a bird. Cheap, healthy & effective
You can also buy cat toothbrushes, but I wouldn't fancy trying to brush a cat's teeth myself ...0 -
Once tartar is on a tooth nothing will remove it apart from a scale and polish. Plaque can be removed using dental treats etc but not tartar iirc0

Try Plaquoff sprinkled on top of wet food.
Also Logic gel - I apply it to the sides of my two's gum lines - has worked magic on them. Again - sorry for the wet food supporters - dry food like Burns does not contain additives or the sugars that wet `pet' food often contains so I prefer to feed this.0 -

Do you work for plaqueoff? :rotfl:
As KVet said nothing can remove tartar apart from a dental. There are so many products on the market for this but I think they are a waste of money.
Logic is good for after a scale and polish to keep the teeth clean and prevent tartar building back up.0 -
Don't waste your money on anything other than a dental.0

Marketing ploy Im afraid, and if anything like the ones for dogs my personal recommendation would be avoid because they make my dog stink to high heavens and he gets the diarrhoea.
Your vet should be advising when your cat requires a dental, not palming off a load of rubbish0 -
While I have not noticed any difference to her teeth (she is only 2 so no real teeth problems) but one of my cats would walk though fire to get to these!
We got a pack free from the vets or we would never have bought them but we put the correct amount on the floor for the cats to have chew on and little chloe literally hoovered them all down including her sisters portion! All we have to do now to get chloe is shake the pack and watch her run!
They are only a quid at the supermarket so I don't mind getting them as an occasional treat for chloe but I don't know about them actually working on their teeth. The amount of biting needed sounds just the same as normal cat biscuits and the dentabits look and feel just like a normal biscuit.0 -

I think dry feeding is best but not everyone can do this! I avoided my two having dentals by regular application of Logic ....:T0 -
Those treats are terrible- to me they smell of nothing (not meaty of fishy) so I doubt alot of cats actually want to eat them!0
