Can they do this?

I have just had a telephone call from my Gas supplier EDF energy to inform me that they have been billing me incorrectly since i moved to them in 2007 and that I owe them the balance. They have explained that it is there fault!!

I can not understand why when it is there fault the mistake has occured that i have to suffer!

Do I have to pay for there Mistake?

Please can someone help me with where i stand?

Thanks

  • You need a revised bill which shows what the charges are. Once you have this, perhaps it will be possible to pick through how this has arisen and work out the right way to handle it.

As said above, you need to post more details.

In principle if they have made a mistake in billing they can claim any money owing. In exactly the same way as they would have to give you a rebate had the mistake been to overcharge.

The normal position they take is that it is your responsibility to check your bills for accuracy - despite the fact is not easy for some people.

However even if they are entitled to claim money, they will often reduce the amount owed as a goodwill measure and they will always give you time to pay what you owe.

Is their mistake that you have been charged for the wrong type of meter?(Metric when you have Imperial) this is common.
