Natwest - Unreasonable? £56 charges for being overdrawn for 6 days O.O

Hey guys I am an 18 year old student and currently have a bank account with Natwest.

I have had this aco!!!! for a number of years now as i was on a 11-17 year old account set up for me by my parents. Anyways since turning 18 they have decided to upgrade me to a current account, without of coarse asking me, just upgrading me to a new account.

So anyways, I have a gym membership that has recently expired and due to there 'terms and conditions' they are allowed to continue taking money out of my account even though my membership has finished.

Anyways, due to that my account was made overdrawn by £13, anyways, i went in to close my Natwest account the other day and found that i was overdrawn, fantastic thanks for letting me know! So anyways, as soon as i found this out i went in and paid back what i owed and tried to close my account, but ... i can't. I apparently have £56 worth of charges for being overdrawn 6 days? seriously!?!?! apparently i'm getting charged 2 months worht of charges at £28 each.

How can they justify that??? i mean, when i asked them why they didn't notify me of my account being overdrawn they said, we add that to your statement, (the one they send me each month) although i honestly do not remember seeing anything that indicated that my bank was overdrawn(unfortunatly i shred them for security reasons). Plus how does it cost the bank £28 to send me my bank statement?

This is fairly outrageous like, i mean im a student i'm 18 years old, what little money i do have goes towards trying to shape myself a future in this cruel cruel world :\

I hate banks already, and i havnt even started to rack up debt to go to university :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

  • Natwest have just reduced their charges - if you ask it is possible they might apply the reductions now.

Yes as discussed before. Complain to the gym, not Natwest.

why did you think you could keep an 11-17 year old account when you turned 18?
  • When I went with my son to open his Natwest Adapt a/c he had to tick a box stating he wanted the bank to automatically upgrade the a/c to a full current a/c upon turning 18.

As others have said you need to address the issue with the gym first. Then I think a case of pleading with the bank for leniency on this occasion to get the charges reduced/refunded is maybe the way to go. They will probably want you to stay with them and open an undergraduate a/c I am sure!
