10Mb BB Or is it???

I have upgraded from 2Mb to 10Mb with NTL. I have done a speed test with a free service which says.....
Download 3.12 Mbps
Upload 371.76 Kbps

Am I right in thinking even on a bad day this is nowhere near?

If I am right and they try again, what sort of figures should I expect minimum?
Can anyone a point me towards a free speed check service that might be more accurate?

Well 1Mb downloads at a speed of approx 130 kbs. You say that you have a download speed of 3.12Mbs. I would say that yes, you are getting 10Mb Broadband.

You are nowhere near 10mb. If you are using adslguide as your speedtester, for comparison, I am getting 6.4mbps on a 8mb line.

Which speed check did you use and at what time of day?

Your upload looks pretty much spot on for a 400k upload which I would imagine is what you're on.

Download speeds are much more variable,it really depends on your contention ratio and how much of that is being taken up.Contention ratios are usually in the order of around 20:1 so if everybody who's on your line is using maximum bandwidth at the same time you'll get speeds in the order of 512k....probably not quite what you were expecting! However that is worst case and it does depend on the time of day,as I'm sure you would imagine.Early evening and you're not going to get full whack,depending on the time of day,3Mbps doesn't seem too out of order.

I can't get that speedtest to work for me. You could give this one a go and see what you get from that. This is a link to a test I did yesterday on my 8mb connection

I'm having a similar problem with BT, was upgraded to 8mb about 10 days ago but the highest reading i've had is about 3.5mb.

I'm on 4 meg service from Telewest.

ADSLguide says I'm getting ... 3.8mb [down] and 354kb [up]
Abeltronica says I'm getting ... 3.59mb [down], 344kb [up]
Speedcheck curiously states that I'm on 5.7 mb! [only figure given].
Looks good in comparison to 8 & 10 mb speeds ... :>)

I use a quick download to measure....umm my download with no one else on my connection i get the full 10mb from http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/support/install/ just start a d/l (save to disk) for a few seconds
