Should we open a joint account?

I'm hoping someone can help me, espically if they have been in my position.

I recently got married. My husband and I want to open a joint account together, just for ease of household bills etc. At the moment we have our own seperate accounts. When I was 18 I ran some large debts up, most of them have been repaid (£200 left on one but pay £30 monthly on that) but as I was a University and burried my head a little I got two defaults against my name.

Anyway, for a few years after I struggled to get credit and had to open a basic bank account etc. I have had a 'normal' bank account for two years now, £100 overdraft, chequebook etc, 4 x credit cards, 2 x catalogues. I am paying things off on time, but still occasionally get declined for things.

We have a mortgage that is just in my husbands name.

Our mortgage will need to be renewed in 2 years time (we had a 4 yr fixed) and I am kind of freaking out that if we open a joint account for bills, my financial association with him will affect it greatly and we'll get turned down? There is no major necessity to have this joint account, it just maybe easier?

Does anyone know or had any experience with this? Has it affected anyone to the point they get declined for a renewal of a mortgage?

Thanks for your help

  • Can you not just open a basic account (no overdraft) in one of your names that accepts bank transfers and allows direct debits, you dont require a joint bank account for paying household bills.
