i stopped smoking  11 new years ago cant stand the smell of stale smoke, they say reformed smokers are the worst (moaners) tis tru i am!!!

but i always think there will be something that will   crack me and i will start again  i hope not.. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

14 years for me. I cannot believe I used to smell like smokers smell. How I couldn't notice I just don't know. I had many attempts at giving up but that mad craving always got me in the end and I would rush to the shops to buy a packet. What worked for me finally was keeping a packet of fags in my bag. Whenever the craving got really bad I would tell myself to calm down and I could have one in 5 minutes. I kept the packet for over a month without touching them. Binned them then and have never touched one since. Hardest part for me was going to the pub - but now I dread coming home from the pub because my clothes and hair smell so bad. My hubbie grew up in a smoking household but never touched them himself. He was accused by a teacher in school of smoking because his clothes smelt so bad. He is totally anti smoking and its banned in our house or in front of children.

Go for it - you can do it. You don't need gums just will power.

I also stopped on 1 Feb 02 using the book Allen Carrs Easyway to stop smoking, it cost me about £6 from amzon (I have no connection to eithr Mr Carr or Amazon).

This was the biggest bargain of my life and I never expect to find a better one - since then I've reccomended or loaned it to several friends, the ones who've read it have also stopped. A note of caution, its common to put the book down part way through and have trouble picking it up again, I did for 2 weeks, my boss was 3 months, just read it through with an open mind - there are no scare tactics anyware in the book.

Rather than take my word for it read the 300+ customer reviews on amazon for this book (I was so amazed I wrote my own "After 8+ months"), that's what convinced me to give it a go. Its simple and feels permanent, I have never envied smokers since I stopped - quite the opposite! I actually enjoyed stopping (I know smokers won't beleive that, I wouldn't have until 2 years ago).

I'm convinced I will never smoke again, don't mind being around smokers, haven't changed any other habits but can't beleive I smoked 20+ a day (40 on boozy nights) for 20+ years, I just wish I had done it many, many years ago.

Good luck to all at stopping, whatever method you use, its worth it, and not just for the financial benefits.

    Happy New Year,

    Mike

The Allen Carr book which i also used to stop smoking last April, suggests looking at the smoking habit from a different perspective. the books encourages us to not consider that we are giving up anything pleasurable but rather freeing ourselves from the tyrannies that smoking imposes on us.
i had smoked 30 a day for 40 years and found it easy to give up, it is the psychological triggers rather than physical craving that bothered me, and sometimes I still get caught unaware, certain situations trigger the wish for a ciggie.
I actually looked forward to getting a cold this year just to see if it progressed to my usual chest infection....it didn't.
Try the book, nothing to lose, only costs a bit more than a packet of ciggies.

I can't say exactly how it worked but it did, maybe a bit like being hypnotised or brainwashed (more like de-programmed actually). I just didn't want to smoke anymore and now, 23 months later the idea of smoking seems a bit strange "why would I want to do that???" :-/

I feel like a non-smoker, rather than an ex-smoker, I can't give the book any higher praise than that.
