Moving manhole cover?

Hi

Thinking of having a conservatory added to our house but unfortunately there is a manhole where we want the conservatory to go. Doesn't need to move far, anyone had this work done and idea of cost? Did a quick search on google and saw a quote of £500! Bummer if that's the case!

If the manhole cover will be inside your conservatory you can change it for a sealed manhole cover.

This would require very little work by comparison. The lid is screwed down in all 4 corners and there is a rubber seal running all the way around the outside of the cover.

Quite often the manhole cover is there because you have one or more branches coming into the stack. This would further increase the cost of moving it.

The only drawback is that you will either need to use removable floor coverings or cut the floor tiles or laminate floor around the perimiter of the cover.

My advice would be to get a few quotes yourselves. Looking for prices of similar jobs won't help you in this case.

Then decide which route you want to take.

Thanks for the reply. We've got another couple of conservatory people over this week, so I'll also ask their advice when they are measuring up.

I used to build conservatories for a company and came across this problem all the time.Sometimes it is straightforward, sometimes not, depending on depth and how many branches are going into the manhole. If it was a complicated one,we would use a double sealed manhole lid inside the conservatory,if not, then it would be moved. In either case the company doing the job should be able to advise you.

You probably want a recessed tray double sealed manhole cover. Your conservatory flooring can be laid in the tray to match the rest of the conservatory and thereby conceal it although this can involve quite a bit of cutting of tiles or whatever to get a good match.
