no evening buffet?

when you go to someone elses wedding, do you expect an evening buffet? i've only ever been to one that had one, and it was a plentiful iceland special lol!
i'm thinking if the evening reception doesnt start til about 7ish then most people would have already eaten when they get there? we are having a wedding breakfast. the co-ordinator said they are flexible with the package so i was thinking of asking to scrap the evening buffet (its only sandwiches anyway) and use the money for booze instead to get the party going

The usual logic is that the wedding breakfast (why is it called that?) is at 4 or 5pm, so people will be peckish again by 9 or so when they serve the buffet.
However, at weddings I've been to that have had them people have just picked at it because it's there. We're not planning on having one (our meal will be slightly later at around 5:30).0 -
Wikipedia wrote:A wedding breakfast is a dinner given to the bride, bridegroom and guests at the wedding reception that follows a wedding in England or New Zealand.
While not normally a morning meal, the name apparently arises from the tradition that the bride and bridegroom would have been fasting before the wedding, and so the reception would be the time when they would break their fast. This is consistent with the fact that in past centuries, England (as all of Western Europe) was Roman Catholic and the tradition of fasting before receiving the Eucharist at Mass would have been commonplace.
Another theory on the origin of the term is that the wedding breakfast is the first meal of a couple's married life, just as breakfast is the first meal of the day.

I've never been to an Evening Reception where no food was offered, usually a really nice buffet. Sometimes had a glass of bubbly with the cake as well.
They have been in hotels, clubs, halls, pubs.A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.

I think something is expected in the evening, although not necessarily a buffet - we're having a cone of fish and chips for everyone as its at the seaside, and the cake as pudding. I think if I'm honest I'd be a bit hungry by that time, but a slice of cake would be fine rather than a whole buffet.0

We're having a buffet for the meal (about 5.30/6pm) - but the venue do "late bites" which you can have bacon/sausage/chip butties later, which we thought would be nice when everyone has had a few sherries! A friend of ours had their meal late ish (5ish) then had the cake cut up for supper offered with tea or coffee, I think about 9.30, which went down really well."Normal is not something to aspire to - it is something to get away from" - Jodie Foster0

Hi,
I would expect some form of food or nibbles at an evening do.
We're kind've doing things the opposite way around. After we're hitched, and get back to the village hall, about 5ish we're having a ploughmans and then later in the evening we're having some hot food - jacket potatos, chilli, veggie kebabs, stuff like that.
If you're not planning on serving something, I'd let people know (even just by word of mouth) as some people don't have tea or only snack as they think they'll be food at the evening do.0 -
i have some sort of food even if it was only some sarnies....or could u slice up the cake and serve it a bit later ?onwards and upwards0

If we were still having the package at the HI em, we would have had the buffet along with the wedding breakfast beforehand.
I've never been to a do at night and there has not been anything to eat there.
Just a thought, would you be able to swap the buffet for drink? We would have had to stick to the package you see, we could add to it but we couldn't go without and swap.
(It is you getting married at the HI isn't it? If not, ignore the above lol)Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
yeah its the holiday inn shell, but she said it was a flexible package. just thought a bit of booze might make a bit of a kick start to the evening, but we're on such a tight budget that it would have to be one or the other really... of course i would let people know if there wasnt going to be food, it was just an idea i was toying with, but if the general concensus is that its wrong to not have food then i shall toy no longer lol!Mummy to

Nothing is ever wrong em, it's completely yours and your OH's choice:)
I'm always ravenous after a few drinks, most people i know are lol
Work out if its better to swap the butties for drink, then add something on to eat, or keep the sandwiches and maybe buy 1 or 2 drinks for everyone. Or keep it as it is, so sandwiches and no drink, or have drink and nothing to eat.
Entirely upto you chick! xTank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0
