Council Tax Question

If I take occupation of a property about 2 weeks prior to the termination of my tenancy on another property am I liable for two sets of council tax for those two weeks?

Comments

  • I would suggesting ringing your council, but just for your info, I had a similar situation recently. My council told me that so long as the property I was not going to pay tax on was empty (and by empty, they were very specific - no beds, couches, chairs etc!) there was no charge.

    Hope that helps a little.

Ok many thanks. The property I will be leaving is unfurnished.

This would mean that you are liable, however if I remember correctly you can get a discount.

Ok. So are you saying I will be due to pay CT on both properties for the period from when I occupy the second property until the time my tenancy expires on the first? Surely being unfurnished would make it less likely I would need to pay not more. I guess I need to contact the council and ask them.
