Steel pots need coat of something - Please advise!!

Hi, I have bought some steel garden planters, they are in a black finish but everytime it rains on them, or I water the plants in them, it leaves horrible white water marks all over them, hence they only look great when its raining!

I think that giving them a coat of some sort of varnish would help keep them looking shiny and free from water marks but don't know what kind to use.

There only seems to be varnish for wood and nothing for metal, I think an outdoor wood varnish might work but am not sure.

I could really do with some advice!! Thank you in advance!

    Thanks DFC,

I thought about that but I am only really looking for something to coat them with, not actually re paint them with.

WD40, clean engine oil, baby oil, car wax,

just wipe over them with a rag soaked in what ever you choice,as long it contains oil or wax of some kind it should work.
a varnish will dry so the stains will just apear on top of it.

Remembered I had some 3 in 1 oil this morning so I've been out and given them a coat, looks amazing!!!! No more water marks, hope the effect lasts!

    Thanks everyone for your ideas!
