Hi There,
Ive just received a text stating that I have to call a number (0800 number) to confirm safe receipt of my new MBNA card, but I havent got an MBNA card and certainly havent applied for one.
Should I call them to check this or ignore it
.

Yep I would check it.
Virgin (part of mbna) also send text reminders to make sure you've received your card in case you've applied for a Virgin lately.0 -

You said yourself you don't have one so delete the text! It could be an old number of a customer or anything - just erase it, evidently it is not yours. :beer:2010 - year of the troll

Hi thanks for replying.
No I havent applied to any credit cards recently. I dont know if they have just taken down someones mobile number wrong, or if someone is trying to pull a fast one.
Should I phone the number they texted to me? Im a bit apprehensive to do this incase its one of those phone scam things.

Well then you're mad! Its doing idiotic stuff like this that causes ID Fraud! What will be the first thing MBNA ask for, do you think?
PERSONAL DETAILS!
Jackie, ignore this advice - never ever ring a number that you have no dealings with - never!2010 - year of the troll

Hiya,
I was just a bit worried incase someone was trying to get a credit card in my name, although I dont know where they would have got my mobile number from because its a PAYG number.

Hiya
Its obviously an old number to someone else that you now have, or just similar and the 'customer' gave the wrong number to MBNA.
Either way, if you do not have any cards with them then just erase the text and forget it. I used to get mini statements on my phone for a bank account and when I went into the bank and showed them the text they said delete it, I complained about that but they told me that it is upto the customer to change the number not the receiver.
I said fine then. As the customer gave the wrong number, no DPA was breached. It would have been if the bank went into the customers account, but they never. Only the actual customer can make amendments.
Even if you rung MBNA, they wouldn't speak to you! Waste of time, money and effort! :j2010 - year of the troll

Like I said.. check it out, not call the number. Call MBNA from a verified number, tell them you've received a text message about a new credit card, and ask them if any applications have been made in your details lately.
"never ever ring a number that you have no dealings with - never!" that's bad advice, how do you think ID theft works? If no one reported the theft, you'd end up with debt collection agencies etc. popping round your door.
If in doubt check it out through legitimate sources, don't ignore it.
Quoting the home office:
"If you think you are a victim:
Act quickly to investigate your concerns.
Look at your credit report in detail. If you find entries relating to organisations you do not normally deal with, contact them immediately and keep a record of your actions, including who you spoke to and when and any copies of letters sent and received. The credit reference agencies will help you with this – you will only need to contact one credit reference agency and they will contact the others on your behalf."
Pretty sure it doesn't say 'Just ignore it if you've never had dealing with that company before'.
To the OP, ultimately its your decision but I would check it out, better safe than sorry.
Contact details are here:

Could be an idea to google the number it was sent from, that helps with a lot of these queries.
Failing that you can check your credit profile and see if there is an application or marker relating to MBNA if you are worried about fraud.
I certainly wouldn't call the number it states though.0 -
The OP does not have an MBNA card therefore she should never ring. Why would you check it out Sparky? For what reason, if you don't have a product you erase the text - simple!
I already said what it was, someone gave wrong number or they have changed numbers and the number that the OP has is a re-generated one from an old MBNA customer.
Do not ring MBNA. No account, why bother?2010 - year of the troll
