This is not a problem. AMD processors have a smaller cache but because of the way they work this doesn't effect performance in the same way as Intel processors.
The AMD Sempron 3100+ was considered the best "bang for the buck" processor when it came out. It's much better than a Sempron 3000, for instance, because it's based on a different and better processor.
I'd say this looks like a very good deal.0 -

Ah...well those were the days of O' levels - not GCSE's. For those of you too young to know what O' levels are they were like GCSE's only they were not a piece of p**s.
Anyway - I did a science degree so plagerising wasn't really that easy - especially under exam conditions. But for those studying the arts I think there were books around and a library. :-)0 -

Sounds like I'm in the same position as you. Going to uni in sept, wanted a good deal for under 500 quid. This has loads more memory than anything else I could find. I'm writing this on it now and have been really pleased so far. I think you should get it. Go through Quidco to cover the delivery cost! You'll need to get Microsoft Office from somewhere (*cough*downloadit*cough*) but apart from that its pretty much ready to use for everything you'll need.
Hope that helps a bit :-)
Thanks very much.
If I buy one of these, can I include a longer lasting battery, as 60-90 minutes use doesn't sound much..............If so , any idea of the cost ?
Thanks to all who replied !0 -
They sell special (external) flat basis you can connect to any laptop to give long-lasting battery life. They add quite a bit to the weight (~1 Kg) but still portable as they are designed just to fit under the latptop base. Usually they allow you to use the laptop for 7+hours (depending on models) besides your regular battery life. These are very used by people regularly travelling on long flights.0

If your after a uni laptop, then this it the wrong one to go for. Yes its cheap, but there are other cheap laptops which would be more suitable. Somebody has already stated the battery life is poor, and a uni student whos not computer savvy isnt going to be needed a gig of ram and 100gig hdd space! Buy a cheaper, smaller, lighter laptop with a better battery life if your just intersted in doing a little work, otherwise your not getting what you want.0

When it comes to laptops battery life is very subjective and is controlled entirely by what you're doing. Anything that uses more power will run the battery down quicker.
So, CD drive, music, videos or lots of hard disc access will flatten a battery quickly. On the other hand simple stuff like typing or browsing will see it run for ages.
Among the many laptops I've owned/used/supported over the years I've found new laptops from big brands like Toshiba that claim 3 hour life and with a bit of use like above its dead in under an hour. Likewise I've found others that only claim 90 mins (like this acer) will run for 3 hours or more with light use.
As for acutal use of a laptop, 99% of the time you're beside a power socket... EVEN ON TRAINS! (The new virgin ones). More often than not you're in the situation that you're plugged in at 1 location then unplug to relocate... think library to lecture etc.
Personally I think this is a great uni/student laptop since it has what you need... STORAGE! You'll be surprised how much space 3 years of course work takes up, plus you need room for all your digital pictures and mp3 music you'll accumulate from your new friends!
Ps: I ordered 2 of these Acer laptops on Monday (see original post) and they arrived today in perfect condition. Very happy.0 -
There are some good points about the battery life, but apparently this one really does only last 70 minutes. See here for a review of a similar machine (same base model, but less memory, smaller hard disk, worse processor).
I still like mine, and still think it's a bargain!0 -
Its already been stated it has a poor battery life, 70 minutes tops, is poor! The main reason being the processor is a sempron, a PC---> Laptop conversion which uses hell of a lot more power then processors specifically designed for laptops, i.e. centrinos. Depending on your needs this is or isnt a good buy, but the thread started stated they only wanted basic use, so in that case I would not reccomend this. If your after more bang for the buck, i.e. hdd space then this is great.0

Erm, I may be being completely dim here but the link at the start of the thread to the comet site doesn't work. And I can't find the same package - have they taken it off?0
