On top of that the DVD writer in the PC World one is only 4x write whereas the Acer is 8x. The processor in the Advent is 3000+ but that in the Acer is 3100+.
I stand corrected. My apologies :P

Plus the Acer has a dual-layer DVD burner (9GBish instead of 4.7GBish). The PC World Advent isn't very specific, but they'd probably make more of a song-and-dance if it were.
With the Acer, you just get a recovery disk - no original Windows media. If anyone finds out that you can call them and get a copy sent out (like with the Dells), please post here ;o)0 -

You're lucky you got a recovery disc! My mate had to burn his own! This site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!

Could you computer savvy people out there tell me if this would be suitable for a first year uni student............not interested in gaming at all.
Or if you know of any better offers for a similar laptop.
I know there's a "What's the best laptop deal" or something similar but it seems to have decended into arguing about technicalities that I don't really understand and on laptops over £1000.
Any help or advice will be gratefully received.0 -

I would have thought it was more than adequate. If you are not playing games providing you are not doing a course in computer aided design or anything which requires heavy graphics processing I doubt you will need anything more than a word processor, spreadsheet (maybe) and internet connection (maybe). It depends on what you want the laptop to do.
However, when I went to university there were no such things as mobile phones or PC's. All we needed as paper, pens and a calculator.0 -
I agree that this should be fine as a Uni laptop. Just do bear in mind that the battery life isn't that great (1 hour to 90 mins), so if you're planning to finish off any work on long train trips, perhaps look elsewhere!0

Sounds like I'm in the same position as you. Going to uni in sept, wanted a good deal for under 500 quid. This has loads more memory than anything else I could find. I'm writing this on it now and have been really pleased so far. I think you should get it. Go through Quidco to cover the delivery cost! You'll need to get Microsoft Office from somewhere (*cough*downloadit*cough*) but apart from that its pretty much ready to use for everything you'll need.
Hope that helps a bit :-)0 -
Part of the setup process is the invitation to burn a recovery disk, either onto a DVD or a few CDs. It's not normal to find one with the systems now but a good idea to create your own before doing anything else.martinmarv wrote:With the Acer, you just get a recovery disk - no original Windows media.
