Cancelling my package with VirginMedia

This is my first message in a forum. I have been reading a bit over this weekend and its a bundle of information there to help people. My dilema today is, I have been with VirginMedia since 2006 and on joining them I had signed paper contracts with them for the 3in1 package for £30 then. I called today to cancel the 3in1 services I have had with them over these past years by giving them a month's notice. I am told that I am in contract with them for having phoned and requested a call barring on the line. The guy then tells me that as i made the change to the telephone at that time, I also requested the size of my TV to a large size (I had watching TV, so that was news to me - then it became my Broadband) and on these changes, i have been in contract with them since this Feb, 2009 and therefore have 4 months to go on this contract. I have asked for all the transcripts of calls that I have made to them agreeing to these changes as they said, he then directs me to another dept for which I refuse even to go there. He will put a cancellation notice on my account and that I will incur a charge o£57 for earlier cancalletion of contract. I think its day-light robbery and I aint paying it. Any ideas as I have a month to resolve this sillyness from VirginMedia.

I am no fan of VirginMedia but here is my view. VirginMedia have many different packages, as you change from one to another a new contract starts. They do not keep transcripts of conversations, just a couple of lines of notes. In these notes I've no doubt it will say that you changed package (I'm not saying you did). To get this information it will cost you £10 on a SAR request. If you don't pay within 30 days, I'm sure it will go as a default against you. This will go against your record. You may or not care about this, but it is something you need to consider. Then they need to try and recover the £57 from you, which I believe, even through the courts, they have little prospect of getting. Of course if they do default you, you can fight them through the Information Commisionaire. All a fair bit of a hastle for £57.

Just a couple of points. If you have broadband, do you use their email? Because you will need to change it. Phone number - needs to go elsewhere!!

    Good Luck

All calls to VM are recorded.

dmg24, Hate to disagree, but as somebody who worked there for many years (too many),they only record a handful of calls for monitoring purposes. And even they won't be available 8 months later. A couple of lines in the notes - that will be all, I promise you.

  • It does seem to be standard practice with VM. That if you change to a different package, then you will start a new 12 month contract with them.

In this case, is it worth cancelling the services - just keep it and downgrade the package, or will that be another contract. they are full of con people at VM, because when you ring to ask a question, a package is sold to you without your fully understanding that you are tying yourself into another contract. am really fuming with so much anger. any substantial ideas will be gratefully appreciate. thanks Limota
