Debit card fraud!

Hello all,

I am pretty certain that a payment of £156.65 has been fraululently taken from my current account to JS Online Grocery. We do not buy our food online, and never spend this much anway! I called the bank and they gave me a telephone number that was the reference against the transaction. I called that and it was indeed Sainsbury's Grocery Online. I told them that I do not order food online and I gave them my postcode. They said they do not have me set up for an account. They told me to cancel / place my card on hold (done) and call the police. I am going to talk to my wife when she gets out of work at 1.30, just to ensure she hasn't brought somnething I didn't know about!? Then, I will call the police. I was wondering if anyone on here has any experience with this sort of thing? I am obviously really worried about this, and would really appreciate any advice. For instance, what are the chances of me getting this money back if I am right?

Thanks for reading!

  • Thanks for the reply. I have checked with my wife and we are convinced this is wrong. So, I have now spoken again to A&L. They told me that they will look into it themselves (Fraud Dept?) and have it sorted within a couple of weeks. The cards is frozen and new ones are to be sent out to me within a week. This transaction took place on the 10th (last Thursday) and only appeared on my online statement this morning. I think this is very strange. Surely, if someone had my details they would have gone for it and done more damage? There do not appear to be any more outstanding debits to go on the acccount. Anyway, my main question: you said to "register a specific fraud claim". Have I done this by informing A&L, or do I also need to call the police. The lady said that letting the police know what not hurry things up or make a difference.

    Thanks again.

  • Hi

I too have been defrauded by somebody using my card details at JS Online Grocery. I have reported it to the bank who have stopped my card and are disputing the transaction. It was only a relatively small figure (£61.29) - perhaps the fraudster's theory is that it will go unnoticed if it is a reasonable amount that an individual could realistically spend doing online shopping. I am really concerned about where they would have got my card details - I am pretty savvy about keeping stuff safe! I also have a debit waiting to come out that is for £30ish quid which I don't remember spending - so will have to wait and see if that is fraudulent too. What a pain in the bum.

I just thought I would post this up here so that people can see it has happened to more than one person (this thread came up on the 1st page when I googled JS Online Grocery to find out what it was).

    Thanks,

    Jules

    HI

Was subject to a debit card fraud of over £2k. The bank told me that the card details or the cloned card could have existed for over 18 months. What tends to happen is that they put through a test transaction and if that goes ok may try for larger sums. Don't want to alarm you though as mine was used in Australia where they don't always have chip and pin so may be different to yours.
You are doing the right thing by reporting it and cancelling the cards. The bank should reimburse you although they may have to investigate first to see if you've given out your pin etc.

We were reimbursed all the money within four days ie fraud discovered late Friday and reported, reported again to specialist dept on Saturday and was back in our account by Tuesday.

There's nothing much you can do now, just keep an eye on your account every day.

We were worried about ever using our card again but realised that if someone is determined to do this, there isn't alot we can do about it other than only deal in cash.

If you are out of pocket, then you are the victim and therefore you should report it to the police. If your bank is dealing with it, and investigating, chances are you will be reimbursed your money, so they are then the victim and they should deal with the police.
  • I've just gone through my statement and found a payment to JS Online. Also for £156, the exact same amount as the original post on this thread. I'm on a trip around Asia and will clearly be able to prove that I didn't make the payment. Fingers crossed, I'll be able to get the money back. I rarely check my bank statements- and I dread to think how many of these 'little' thefts could have happened to me over the last few years with my present debit card. I will of course be scrutinising every penny that leaves my account from now on!

Went through my bank statement and noticed payment to Asda on 19th Dec 2011 for £150.28 then on 20th £90.17. My computer had a faulty hard drive and had not been working, did not replace it till Jan 2012.

Would like to know the outcome of anyones experiance with this sort of fraud please.

You don't need a hard drive to see bank statements or credit card ones.
Are you saying these transactions were fraudelent? and if so have you done anything about it?
