Student son and his bank charges

My student son ( 21 ) has banked with Abbey for the past three years and was given an interest free over draft facility of £1500.However there has been a number of occasions where he has gone over the limit.
The charges have been horrendous. He lost his student job 6 months ago which was allowing him to deposit regularly into his account however since then he has been struggling.Abbey has now demanded his card back which he has not been using anyway, the interest repayments have kicked in and they are demanding full payment of his overdraft. How can he do this with no job! and they continue to load onto to the debt with their bank charges!!
He is due to speak to them today and hopefully he can arrange a repayment facility with the limited funds I can scrape together to help him out and ward off a bad credit rating.
Maybe I'm stating the obvious however can he try to claim back bank charges. Is this a viable option in my sons case? As I'm struggling myself to make ends meet any any help we can get would be appreciated.

He can reclaim charges at any time so get him to start the process. The charges claim may well be stayed but he needs to follow the process outlined by Martin on here.worriedsinglemum wrote: »My student son ( 21 ) has banked with Abbey for the past three years and was given an interest free over draft facility of £1500.However there has been a number of occasions where he has gone over the limit.
