preparation for moving

Well my EA seems to think I might exchange this week, and has discussed dates for completion. The people I'm buying from have already moved out, and the people who are buying my place are on holiday the week of the 28th September, so he's suggested Friday the 9th October.

I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the things that will need doing before that date. I've already got some quotes for removals so hopefully that is in hand, but what about:

- services e.g. gas electric water phone? Do I write to my existing providers and give them notice to close the accounts on the day? What about for the new place - do I have to write or can I arrange for them to be connected on the day of completion?

- Broadband. I need it for work so want to be up and running asap. How much notice do I need to give, and are they likely to be able to provide it on the day I want? Thinking of using BT or O2 (I have an O2 mobile so that gets a discount).

- Council tax etc. again do I just write to my existing council and the new one?

Anything else important I've forgotten? I'll probably get mail forwarded or leave a forwarding address, but will notify banks, DVLA, TV license people etc. in due course.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.

  • ADSL could be a pain to set up if the current owner has it, sometimes there is a marker left on a line that prevents a provider setting up a service, even when the line has been moved over to your account and it can take a while to be removed.

Yesterday on the Grabbit forum I saw an offer for an O2 3G dongle for £9.99, and I think the monthly charge is quite reasonable, so definitely look at getting one of those to tide you over.
  • We are in process of buying, no dates or contracts signed as yet but your thread will be useful.
In regards to change of address helpiammoving.com is good resource. I have not yet used it but with sites like this and similar you can tick all of the banks, phone company, store cards etc that you have any dealings with to chnage your address. I was going to use this!
