ended item by mistake.. now what??

I had an auction going on ebay. I received an emial from a buyer wishing to instigate a "buy it now". I agreed to the sum he was willing to pay. He requested I change the auction to a buy it now, and he would purchase the item I had for sale.

However, I tried to change the terms to " buy it now", and ended the auction by mistake. I had bids on my item too, so by ending it, I somehow managed (mistakingly) to allow the highest bidder to purchase the item at their highets bidding price.

I immediatly sent an email to the bidder, advising them not to send any money, as the item had been ended by mistake and was no longer for sale.

Anyone else been as stupid as me, and if so, what happend??

My "buy it now" buyer has paid me the amount agreed for the item too, so i intend to post the item to him a.s.a.p

What were you planning on saying to your bidders anyway?
It would have been much fairer to all concerned to let the auction run its course. Normally "buy now" requests are for a lot less that the item would go for in an auction, which is why they try it on.
Hopefully your high bidder will understand but you were shafting him either way.
    Can I help?
  • No, I can't agree with you. I clearly stated in my auction that I was open to any buy it now offers. So potential bidders where fully aware of the situation.

The buyer has paid more than I expected to get from the auction to be honest, and we are both happy with the transaction.

I have done "buy it now" in the past with other auctions, and have managed to end the bidding with no problems or comebacks.

the highest bidder in this case was from poland, and my auctions clearly state that folks bidding from outside the uk must email me first. This bidder incidentally did not, yet if the buy it now offer hadn't come about, I would've been quite happy to go with the highest bidder, be they from Poland or not.

Hi the only way you've done that is by going for the second option when you have ended the auction - agreeing to sell to highest bidder, that's where you went wrong.

if it happens next time, go for the first option of cancelling bids, then you end the current auction and relist as a buy it now with the buyer as the only aproved bidder

If you don't sell to the Polish one they can report you as a non performing seller and leave bad feedback even though you said email first, it doesn't wash with ebay even though they are your terms.

By offering to end an auction early on a offer you are breaching ebay rules and can be reported under several categories. If you want a BIN option on your auctions then you are supposed to pay the BIN option up front and list with one, you can't make up your own terms that go directly against ebay regulations that you signed up for.

The only way you can have sold that item on ebay to your BIN offer would be to have cancelled all other bids telling them porkies ,Ie item no longer available, which is another breach, then adding a BIN, which would cost you, then selling to said bidder.

As for what happens now, obviously the real winner of this item has the ability to report you as a non performing seller and leave you a negative.

  • I get what you you are all saying, but this bin thing happens regularly. It has happened to me before on quite a few occassions when I've been bidding on items, but I've just taken it as tuff luck on my part for not getting in there first.

I'm not a business seller at all. I usually sell things I've bought on ebay which have proven to be wrong size or something. It saves me the hassle of contacting the seller and requesting refunds, especially when there is nothing else wrong with the item.

My intentions have never been to "shaft" or rip anyone one off. I've still payed ebay and paypal fees on the money I've received off this item in question. I was un-aware of ebay's terms (my fault I know). But I've been nieve unfortunatly.

I have 100% positive feedback over 300 transactions of buying and selling. This was a one off incident. That's why I made the mistake in selling to highest bidder, because I have never done this before.

Fingers crossed the ebayer is understanding. However, I've learnt my lesson.
