Allowing LL access question!

Hi, quick question!

Recently started a tenancy on our house. Landlord very amenable. Had agency call OH yesterday saying landlord wished to pop round Monday morning to trim the massive hedge that goes round two sides of the garden (he said he likes to do this every so often which is fine with us!) He needed someone to be in so he could get to elec sockets.

I said fine as I'll be at home... Only thing is it'll be me and baby and baby is quite young and no doubt when LL is here I'll be needing to feed baby whereupon I usually lounge on the sofa watching Jeremy Kyle and browsling internet (ROFL:D)... Basically I'm asking is it okay to explain to LL that I want the lounge to myself and could he not come in for the sake of my decency? :o

He wouldn't have any need to be in here anyway but I suppose I just wondered if I'm letting him in on the proviso he's doing said gardening stuff, am I therefore allowing him access to the whole house?

  • The poor bloke might need a wee once he's done the hedges and it would be churlish to refuse, especially if you'd made him a cuppa while he's doing it.

I know Americans who take their babies out to restaurants and suckle them at the table. They just drape a shawl over their shoulders so baby's head is underneath and no-one can see anything even if they wanted to, so you could consider doing something like that just this once.

I think it's unlikely that your landlord would want a snoop round and to treat him like he might could get you off on completely the wrong foot in your relationship with him.

I HATE HATE HATE it when somebody:
a] expects I am there to wait on them and make tea
b] they want to use the loo
  • Well personally, I'd point him to a socket in the hall or kitchen, make him a cuppa and let him get on with it.

As for feeding the little 'un, well, I'd just go upstairs in case the landlord blunders in downstairs asking to wash his hands. I'd feed the kid upstairs and then go back downstairs pronto in case I'd missed a nuance of Jeremy Kyle's show.

Or I'd record Jeremy if I was that bothered and watch it properly when the landlord had disappeared down the road with his clippings.

You might find the landlord is happy to pass you the plug through the window - mine did that. It also sets a precedent as he'll no doubt be back every 3-4 months to cut it again.

ROFL yep wouldn't want to miss any vital Jeremy Kyle details!:D

No he's fine to have a wee or whatever, and I wasn't thinking of categorically stating he only occupy the hallway or kitchen area sort of thing, more like just explaining I shall be in the living room feeding baby, hope he doesn't mind if I want a bit of privacy but just to knock if he wants owt?

Yes, I'd do this too. It's not a big deal.

I'm assuming there isn't another reason you don't want the LL to see your sitting room?!

LOL no - I'm thinking of an incident I had a few years ago when my DD1 was a baby and we were shortly to move - I fell asleep on the sofa feeding her only to be woken up by a chap from the letting agency walking into the living room followed by a couple who had come to view the house - I was pretty startled sat there with baby attached to me still and they were mortified - tbh I'm not bothered but sometimes other people get quite embarrassed!

That's exactly what I think you should do. Plus, you could mention about Jeremy Kyle and he'll know you're not to be disturbed unless the house is on fire

Hahaha that would make it a bit more interesting but no - a box of baby toys with a cloth book falling out and a Vax with the attachment strewn across the living room isn't quite the same!
