Do you have to tell insurance company you have been broken into?

Hi

I came home yesterday morning to find that my house had been broken into however luckily apart from the house being trashed and the patio door being smashed the only thing missing was about £20.00 cash and my rings (more sentimental value that anything else).

I don't think it is going to be worth me claiming as I have £150.00 excess on both my building and contents so £300.00 and what I would be claiming for is less than this.

But what I wondered is if I don't claim do I have to tell my insurance company that my house was broken into anyway, and if so would this increase my premiums next year or not?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Liz

Yes they will increase your premiums. I had a leak from my shower. I called the insurance company, although they never called me back and I got a plumber in myself to sort it out.

However upon renewal 9 months later they increased my premiums and included details of how they paid me £1000 to sort it out. After an irate call to the insurance company on how they never even contacted me and I had to deal with leak myself, and it cost nowhere near £1000, they changed the cost but as I had had a leak my premiums went up because I have had water damage.

    So the choice is yours.

However you are supposed to tell them of any claims or incidents in last 3 years etc.

You generally have to declare any incidents that would have been covered by the policy (The wording can vary and with some wordings you might not have to declare it).

If you have contacted the Insurer and / or contacted the police about the break in there will be a paper chain so declaring it (Depending on the wording of the question) would be needed. If you do not contact the Insurer and / or the police you can normally get away without declaring it as there is no paper trail

Thanks i'm going to call them in the morning now anyway after doing more tidying up I have found that the key to my side door is missing and I will also need to replace the glass in the patio door, which is just boarded up at the moment so actually this will bring it over and as you both seem to suggest I will need to report this anyway I may as well claim.

    Cheers for your advise
