Sata is a small connection Pata is not0 -
Is the connector at the back of the drive about 2" long and spiky? (lots of pins), or fairly small and flat?
If it's got a lot of pins (40) it's PATA, if it's got a small flat connection it's SATA.0 -

Looking at the pics above I reckon its looks more like a PATA drive.
Can u reccomend me a decent enclosure I could purchase that will work with this. I've been looking on ebay they are fairly cheap but there's soo many to choose from.
Thanks0 -

If it's an old Time laptop then it's certain to be PATA.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Be careful about buying cheap HDD caddy's on eBay. The one I bought was supposed to be solid aluminium, with a cooling fan and came in a box with a lot of references to how cool it kept your hard drives.
I installed a disk, formatted it, and half way through it failed. I opened the case, cut myself on the unfinished (non-aluminium) metal, then burnt myself on the hard drive. It was INSANELY hot!
Personally, I'd either get a cheap cable (without a case for the drive) so you can plug the drive into a PC, but keep it in the open air to ensure it stays cool, or get an external drive from a decent manufacturer.
Update: The caddy I bought actually had IDE (PATA) and SATA controllers, so you can use both types of drive.0 -
