Self Managed DMP-ers please help me?

Good Day All

Despite a staggering throat tightening gut wrenching headache inducing level of debt, today I've woken up with a renewed sense of purpose to basically get something sorted out!

Now I sent all our stuff to payplan, even made them aware that in 3 weeks time I wont have a job anymore (long story!).
The advice I was given was that they cant do anything to help us until I either have another job or get benefits.
Its unlikely that I will get benefits due to the circumstance of me leaving my job.
We are also relocating in 3 months so jobs will either be temporary or I'll end up shafting a new employer....

So that doesnt really help us right now and w're falling behind. Contacted the major payments and they said let the account fall into arrears and then someone will be in contact (really helpful!).

Now what I really need help with is setting up our own self managed dmp but I dont really know where to start?

Any help is greatly received and I know how ace you guys all are...

I will get this sorted, I just need a bit of help in getting on the right path....:A

(I'm not on a DMP, but thought i'd post and bump this back to the top)

Rather than shafting a new employer, how about some temp work?
People that employ temps are used to them leaving so it wouldn't be too much of a surprise when you did go.

I guess the first thing you would need to do is complete a statement of affairs with your income as it would be when you leave your employer. This way your creditors will be able to see your income expenditure and debts so that they can see if they are getting a fair cut of any leftover cash.

I would also contact CAB to see if there is any benefits that you would be entitled to. Best not to just assume that you won't get - no harm in asking.

After this i suppose you should write to your creditors stating that you have been in contact with Payplan and are writing to offer a token payment until you are able to sort out your income and offer more in payment.

  • Collections departments don't pick up your accounts until they are delinquent, so the "let them fall into arrears" advice is unhelpful but true.

If you can't make the payments, you can't make the payments. Write to your creditors and explain the loss of job. Offer token payments of £5/£10/whatever you can afford. You can do this for up to 3 months before they start demanding a better and more permanent arrangement. In the mean time, take the money you would have been spending on payments and save it.

In 3 months' time you will either have another job, or benefits, and will be in a position to make proper offers.

This advice applies to non-secured, non-priority debts. I am assuming you are keeping up full payments on mortgage/rent, council tax and utilities.

yes all our priority payments are up to date...

Does anyone know of a template type letter i can send to my creditors to make them aware of the situation....? Ive tried searching through the forums but I can never seem to find it

From what Ive worked out for next month I can pay every one of our creditors £10, and then for the next month providing I can get a new job, will continue that until we move by which time DH will (hopefully) be in a job that pays double what he earns now....

Collection of sample letters from National Debtline. These apply to England & Wales. If you are in Scotland there's a different set of letters, but they're on there somewhere.
