Wireless router keeps on dropping connections is this normal

I have bought this router from Argos and paid extra thinking that I would get a strong and constant wireless connections for my iphone at home. http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500001801&langId=-1&searchTerms=6757766&Submit=GO+%3E

But it keeps on dropping connections and many times I don't get a connection even with I am only a few meters away from it!!!!!!!

Is this normal? I have used wireless a few times in coffee shops and not had the same problem. I remember seeing a BT advert about how great their wireless router is and that you don't get the usual dropping off that their competitors have. So I am wondering if it would be better to return this and pay loads of dosh or an apple high end wireless router....????? This apple one I am thinking of is this Apple Extreme - http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MB763B/A/AirPort-Extreme?mco=ODgwNzc3Ng
Down size is that is is £140.

But if the cheaper argos one is now working then I might as well get something that will work for £140.

Is there anything I can do with my current router to improve the situation? Or is this just normal for wireless routers???

  • I have an old Netgear WGR614 which I use at home, and my E71 connects to it all the time. It will stay connected for hours without dropping out, so I doubt whether your newer one should.

Quite possibly a settings issue, but hopefully someone with that particular model will come along and tell you more.
  • had very similar problem with brothers router same as this one i did the following and all been ok since that was about 2 months ago somthing to do with the firmware issue

  • Have you updated the firmware in the router yet.

You should be fine next to the router however. Are all the filters in place. Does it drop when ou pick up the phone. Next door interference. Are you using an extension lead anywhere on the phone circuit -- remove it.

Firstly try changing the default channel in the wireless router interface, could just be a neighbour on the same channel casuing interference, or a nearby DECT phone doing the same thing-move the router clear of any other electrical equipment.
The DG834G is a perfectly good router, probably the most common in operation.
