Hello all. I have just got my car back from the garage after paying for the repairs that they told me it needed to pass the MOT. It failed on
  • 3 rear brake pipes
  • offside rear tyre
  • anti roll link
Anyway when i picked it up out of hours the brake warning light was on and when I got it home i noticed the nearside rear tyre had been changed, I took it to another garage today just for advice and they showed me that only 2 of the 3 brake pipes had been replaced and the anti roll link was still the original one!!!
I have been advised to contact VOSA as the car is still in the same condition as when it failed minus 2 of the brake pipes but now has passed! with most of the failures still present. This has all cost me over £500 any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading :j

  • Did they look at both anti roll bar links and are you sure they haven't renewed the rubbers only? The tyre HAD been changed? And you've noticed only 2 brake pipes have been done.
Anti roll bar pin/bush last time I looked was £10 to £20 to buy, 1 tyre, probs £50 max? And no matter what, cant see 3 brake pipes being more than £100 - £150 (I feel I'm over estimating too).
So to me £500 was too much anyway BUT I cant see a garage bumping you out of 1 brake pipe and an anti roll bar link.
  • Hi,
It sounds as if the garage you first went to are not only charging you for work not done but also falsifying MOT test results when it failed and then possibly passing a car as suitable for passing an MOT test when it is not fit.

Like the second garage said, contact your local VOSA office first thing on Monday and also your local Trading Standards office. Don't get any further work done on the car or alter it as VOSA may need to see it "as is" so they can then take action against the first garage.

    Good Luck

Call them, explain what the other garage told you and see if they have any kind of explanation - mentioning that your prepared to contact VOSA first thing Monday, I guess there could have been an oversight and by listening to them you give them a chance to put it right. Or just contact VOSA.

'1 tyre, probs £50 max?' I'm curious, without knowing the make/model of the car how do you know that?
I can't imagine for instance that you can get a run flat from anywhere for less than £80 - I need to buy 4 and the cheapest i've found is £100 each, so if you have any tips on the best place to buy tyres please share :-)

Hi everyone thanks for the quick replys.
The second garage didn't charge me anything to have a quick look and I know it is easy to find fault in others work but when they put it on the ramp I could see only 2 of the 3 pipes had been done.
Not sure about the rubbers on the linkage they stated the front one which was still old had been replaced this is the part they kept calling me about saying they had trouble getting it.

On the Invoice they have charged me
    • replaced front anti roll link parts = £42.05
    • replaced 3 rear brake pipes parts = £37.00
    • replaced tyre = £84
I am ok with the tyre cost its a Landrover Discovery TDi so they are quite expensive but not if they have changed the wrong one the other garage said it they could have clicked the wrong button during the MOT test which would be fair enough but as for the other bits they said how can it fail on these things and then pass on them a few days later?!!!
Thank everyone for your help :j

    Offside or nearside tyre changed.

Is it not possible that they had both wheels off at the same time to fix the other things, but then just put the wheels back on opposite sides?
  • Hi yes that could be possible i'm not very clued up on cars and find myself in the position to accept what garages tell me needs doing but at the moment if I took it for another MOT surely it would fail on the other brake pipe and the anti roll link still.

Are run flats that common? Most people who have them and would have said so.
I took what I saw as would be an average. Coincidently (with it being the discovery) I paid £50 for a tyre for an old Range Rover I had a little over a year ago. I'm not saying they were good tyres, but that was the price fitted.

As far as finding tyres go, I generally look on the internet first then try a national tyre place (this would be the benchmark). After that I'll give the local independent tyre places a call.

I could even rustle up a reasonable argument that one brake pipe could be called two.
